Editor of magazine Beef Mag (website) Scott McGillivray (website - profile) is letting us know that their 40th issue will soon be out for Dec / Jan. And good news, they have now switched to all color throughout the magazine. You see that thumbnail image of Roger (enlarge - galleries - profile)...? That's our ad that will be showing up in their mag. A huge thanks to Scott for designing it.
In other news - they are starting to making plans for their very first 100 BEEF weekend at the Canyon Club Resort in Palm Springs over Memorial Day Weekend 2009. There's not many details as of now but we'll keep you informed as we get more.
Lastly, Scott is wishing to inform all that BEEF is in no way associated with the 'new' BEAR magazine (website - profile). For those who don't know, Scott was the editor for BEAR but this was when the magazine was owned by Brush Creek Media. Recently, the group Bear Omnimedia (website) has acquired the rights to the 'BEAR' trademark, yet they are not affiliated in any way.
ps - here's the full sized image of that thumbnail pic of Roger.

I got my first every BearParty Magazine (website - cover - articles - profile) in the mail the other day. It's the fall issue and wow what a great pocket Bear surprise that was. I had never seen the rag before so when I picked it at the post office, I wasn't sure what it was since it's more of a digest sized mag, yet BearParty is filled with a ton of husky goodness with articles, cartoons, interviews, and the fall CoverBear Dave is just all kinds of gorgeous.
To get a copy, this is what they state from their site: "BearParty Magazine is distributed for free in a hand-selected list of Bear bars around the world, and online to BearParty members. We try to make enough copies available in every location, but even with more than 25,000 copies going out each quarter to hundreds of locations, we know some folks who want a copy aren't getting it. The magazine is free, but it costs us extra to mail it out to individuals. We can mail a printed copy to you quarterly (4 issues a year) in a plain envelope if you pay shipping and handling ~ $10 US ~ $20 International".

Hot off the press is the latest issue of 100% BEEF Mag (website - articles - profile), and that would issue #39 (cover).
Some really great looking men in this issue, like Clint Taylor who's been in many a Bear movie, a well known Bear model. Then there's the real hot Devlin Michaels. And on the cover: Bill... triple woof. Bill is a 50 year old Daddy from San Fran. Overall, this is a real handsome looking issue. Oh, and from what I read from the editorial, we might be seeing some more leather... very cool. You can find a copy of BEEF Mag probably at your nearest adult store, or the best way is to simply order a subscription from their site.

Just a little while back, I put up an article about this great magazine called Pinups (website - article), a mag which has "no words - just an exaggeration of the classic centerfold. The magazine exists in book form but can be taken apart and then tiled together to reveal a life-size image".
Now I already mentioned that in the last article, but what I want to point out is that Pinups went ahead and made a great TubeBear profile. It's close to perfect. They chose a great main photo, added several photos to their galleries, their description is neat, and they added a 720x90 banner which shows up in rotation on both TubeBear and PlanetBears.
Also... Pinups is a magazine, so it's not a personal profile, it's a Mag profile as well as a website profile. So this is a reminder to all those who have a Bear website, to those who are Bear musicians, artists, painters, to those who run Bear companies and bars and even to those who run a Bear group - create a profile on TubeBear, added description, a few photos, and promote it by creating a banner.
Just do like Pinups... who is truly a poster boy for TubeBear.

Can you tell me what you're looking at...? That's the very 1st cover of the very first BEAR magazine (full cover) which was published back in '87. Were you ever curious as to what those early BEAR rags looked like? Well you'll soon be able to see all the back issues online. Bear Fund is working right now on posting the complete archives ~ issues #1 thru #64. All the proceeds will benefit the Bear community through the Bear Fund and the Bears of San Francisco.
A little Bearish history lesson: Richard Bulger and Chris Nelson started the mag back in '87 as a photo-copied flyer. As the magazine grew in popularity, they decided to 'inc' it and they formed Brush Creek Media (archived website) as well as grab the brand name 'BEAR' as a registered trademark.
In '94, they sold the company to BearDog Hoffman who at decided to expand Brush Creek into several 'special-interest' mags (such as 'International Leatherman', 'Hombres Latinos', 'Foreskin Quarterly' to name a few). However, by '00 the company was having financial issues and by '02, BearDog had run the company into the ground. This forced Brush Creek to go bankrupt.
For years the brand name 'BEAR' was actually up for grabs, and either nobody knew about it or nobody actually cared. It wasn't until '06 when Butch Media Ltd of Las Vegas, a creditor's of Brush Creek, decided to go court and they were judicially assigned the name BEAR. Since then, Butch Media has formed Bear Omnimedia and has already published their very 1st BEAR Magazine ~ issue #65, with issue #66 slated for the winter '09 (website - interview - profile).
Once they acquired the BEAR name, they also acquired all the back issues (1 thru 64) as well as the videos. After speaking with the guys at Bear Omnimedia, they told me that they might put up a pay section for guys to view the back issues and whatever proceeds they make from doing this, it will to be benefit charitable groups.
So there's your Bear history lesson for today. Keep an eye out on the Bear Fund website, and we'll be sure to let you know here at PlanetBears when you can start perusing them very 1st BEAR issues... 'cause it's real important to know where your Bear roots come from, and what better way than to look at naked photos of Bearish men (some sources from Wikipedia's article on BEAR Magazine).

Pinups is a magazine created by Christopher Schulz in NYC and it was first published in April '07. It now has 7 issues. It is a quarterly periodical that features one or two male nude models. From their site, they say that "there are no words - just an exaggeration of the classic centerfold. The magazine exists in book form but can be taken apart and then tiled together to reveal a life-size image". What's super great about this mag is the models are quite Bearish and Cubbish.
Pinups will be at the NY Art Book Fair today - from October 24th right thru until the 26th.

The fall issue of BearParty Mag (website - articles - profile) by the makers of CyberBears is now available and should be hitting your local Bear Bar. There are 25,000 copies printed so surely you can find a copy of one somewhere (cover).
From BearParty: "With the strange weather we've been having lately, there's no way to know what kind of fall we should expect. 2008 has been one of those years full of wild contrasts, from celebrations of gay marriage in California to financial and political turmoil all around the globe. Global warming is changing the face of our planet, and divided economic, political, and religious interests are battling. Somehow, as resources get tighter, the interests of disenfranchised gay people always seem to end up out in the cold. But as we struggle to see light at the end of the tunnel, let's focus on the things we can all be grateful for, such as this community of Bears and Bear-lovers we're all a part of, wherever we may be.
Whether you're on your own right now, or sharing the company of friends and lovers, our convenient Bear community event guide has listings for places to gather and beat the cold all around the world. And if you can't get away, we've also put together a warm and sunny gallery featuring a hot, furry daddy Bear named Dave. Just the sort of guy you would want to curl up with on a cold night, and maybe share a Black Russian, like the one we have featured in our Open Bar section. Then you could pop in that
Elijah Black
CD, kick back, and maybe check out the hot artwork by Bear artist
Danyol
on the wall. And hey, if the evening goes well, you might want to get some inspiration from a video or two directed by our featured backroom interviewee, Chris Roma from
HotOlderMale
".

"Once upon a time a Bear wanted a special t-shirt... and Fat 'n Furry was born. This site was designed with Beary blokes in mind..." and so begins the Beary Fairy tale of this new site which designs t-shirts for Bearish men. Right now, the shop isn't open up quite yet. They are working on making sure everything is in order. However if you want to know when the site is open for business, email them and they'll let you know.
Make sure to check out Britain's Next Bear Model episode #3 and you'll see a 'Fat 'n Furry' photo shoot with the 8 contestants. On their main page you'll see the shots taken from that shoot. I'm hoping they will post more pics of those cute UK models and in a bit more higher resolution.

Way back in February (articles), I mentioned that photographer Antinoo was working on a calendar (cover) with the Norway Bears (Den Norske Bamseklubben) using images from classical Nordic paintings.
This calendar is also about safe sex with the motto "Bearback Yes! Bareback No!". From Antinoo's blog: "'Bearback Yes! Bareback No!' is a not-for-profit project financed by different Bear organizations at a national and international level, with the aim of promoting joint activities (such as publicity campaigns) with various social organizations, health institutions, networks of people living with HIV/AIDS, in the educational sphere and with relevant international agencies. Its aim is to promote prevention and safer sex through condom use, and to improve the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS and members of social groups most vulnerable to the disease".

Following that, BEAR mag party will be going on tour (with the continued appearances of Jack Radcliffe) to the following areas: September 20th - a signing at Rainbows and Triangles Bookstore (Albany Bears event); September 21st - Philadelphia Woof event; September 22nd - Woof event in NYC. It's also a model search for the magazine as well. Their promoter, Max Scott, is organizing the event.
And don't miss this: Steven Wolfe (Editor) and Teddy will be on Sirius Satellite Radio on their OutQ program with Larry Flick on September 19th. They will be interviewed on the rebirth of BEAR Magazine and its future.

Bubba of Bubbaclicks is informing us that his newest 'Bear Men 2009 Calendar' (cover) is now available. You can grab yourself a copy at Amazon (here) or at 10percent (here with photo examples of the models) and at Amazon (here). It is also available at some other smaller websites and in local gay retailers.
Bubba is already working on his 2010 calendar (this guy is way organized... I need to pay him just for some organizational skills). From Bubba: "I am in the process of shooting my 2010 calendar right now and also working on a cub calendar too. I will be at Bear Bust this year in Orlando.... anyone coming to Fort Lauderdale and looking for pictures or possibly being in a calendar or magazine, should hit me up".

It was just a couple of days ago that I mentioned that the Bear Boutique was about to go live. Well it's alive, kicking, and it's a bouncing brand new baby Bear boy.
This online shop is direct from France, and it's maintained by a very handsome couple - Axel (Thorn on TubeBear) and Pascal (Pakko). As I mentioned in the last update, Roger and I got to meet them and we took a few pics while we were in Chinatown (here). So head on over to their site and take a look at the t-shirts and baseball caps (coming soon) they have to offer. Roger was wearing one of their shirts the other day ~ which read 'Woofez Moi' ~ and more than one person asked him what it meant and where he got it.
Voulez vous Woofez avec moi, ce soir...?

The Bear Boutique website is not quite ready... yet... but they are planning on opening up shop really soon (as in the next few days). This online shop is run by 2 hot gentlemen who live in France ~ Axel (profile on TubeBear - Thorn) and Pascal (Pakko). They have come up with a real cute design for t-shirts and baseball caps and, realizing that there is no one in France working on Bear goods, that they would take the initiative and start something up.
Axel and Pascal were in Montreal not too long ago, and we (Roger and I, Bob Forrest) met up with them for an afternoon. We headed into Chinatown, ate, and had a few laughs. The visit was short but we did take a few snapshots (snap #1 - snap #2 - snap #3 - snap #4 - snap #5 - snap #6 - snap #7) of our afternoon together, and Roger is going to model some of the t-shirts for their website, and I'll add the pics up once they are ready.

The brand new BEAR magazine is out...! (website - articles - profile). And check out who is on the front cover... why it's Jack Radcliffe who came out of retirement for this occasion (Jack is also on the back cover of this mag). This rag is packed with 64 pages and most of them have full covered images of some really Bearish men. There is a lot less talk and a lot more man, altho there are a few good articles sprinkled about, just enough to sharpen your reading skills.
But... wait... on the cover... it says... episode #65... what the...? Ok, it's a long story... best you check out the interview for all the inside scoop about this, however, it is summed up on their profile as well: "Remember when issue No. 64 came out in 2001? Shortly thereafter it's then publisher got into financial trouble and sank like the Titanic, taking BEAR with it. We all thought it was the end of that, but good things usually don't stay hidden forever. As a creditor of the former publisher, it took us going to court and ultimately granted compensation by being given the former publisher's copyrights to be able to become the new publisher, and bring No. 65 to life 7 years later. DAMN!
Since coming to us, BEAR has undergone the most dramatic metamorphosis of its history with a new look and a new direction to reflect the many levels of an emerging contemporary, mature, masculine community. The result is a crisp, modern look with fresh editorial content featuring hot erotic photography and provocative fiction, blended with humor and informative articles. And having Jack Radcliffe (aka Frank Martini) on the cover definitely was that extra touch to link the past and present together. He still is THE bear god of BEAR Magazine, fur sure".

The following was sent in by BEEF Mag: "100% BEEF Magazine, the successor to the masculine-identified publishing legacy established by the now-defunct legendary 'BEAR' Magazine has released its Sixth Anniversary Collector's Edition: 'Prime Cuts 6: The Sixth Anniversary Collector's Edition' (cover). This annual edition of BEEF marks the completion of BEEF’s 6th year of publishing. Prime Cuts 6 is the sixth in a series of annual collector’s editions which began with the publication of BEEF: Prime Cuts #1 in 2003. BEEF Magazine was launched in May, 2002 by a group of friends after their swift departure from the hugely popular, but poorly managed and now-defunct BEAR Magazine. Excited to continue the publishing legacy established by BEAR Magazine, but also eager to broaden the definitions and masculine sexual identities which BEAR Magazine helped to popularize, co-publishers Scott McGillivray and Larry Woolwine forged a publishing alliance titled after the homoerotic term 'beefcake'. From its first issue, BEEF broke new erotic ground by injecting art, humor and satire into the masculine erotic mix, and by choosing to feature models and materials that, many argued at the time, staunchly challenged some of the rigid parameters which had come to define their publishing predecessor's pages.
'After we left, BEAR Magazine disappeared. But we wanted to continue the work, so we developed BEEF Magazine. We've carved out a unique niche for ourselves,' editor/designer and co-publisher Scott McGillivray notes, adding, 'Our goal is to deliver a mix in each bi-monthly edition of BEEF which is unique, diverse, and which maintains our masculine-identified editorial vision. BEEF celebrates the beauty and sexuality of masculine men of varying ages, races, sizes and shapes'". (continued...)

Issue #37 of Beef Mag (website - cover) is out and available for you all. It's their June/July issue so it's a bit late however their editor Scott McGillivray (website - articles - profile) states in his 'editor's notes' that due to the production of 'Prime Cuts VI' (article) ~ their Anniversary Collector's edition ~ that it took them a bit longer to get out their summer issue.
No matter, it's out, and as usual they have their slew of good looking models... and if you flip the pages over to page 48 thru 54, you will see a feature on photos of Bearish men that I took ~ they called it the 'The Sexy Beasts of PlanetBears'.

The latest issue of BearParty Mag is out (website - articles - profile). It is their summer edition (from July to September). The following is from their current issue: "Don't pronounce the name of our Summer CoverBear like the tragic hero of the popular Shakespeare play. It's pronounced Ro-MAY-oh. But however you say it, Romeio's one hot Bear! In this issue you can see more pictures of him, along with stories about leather mentor and author Blade T. Bannon, and the productive team behind Bear Omnimedia (website - articles). We've also got the final chapter of Ken Slater's popular guide to hooking up online, a new episode of the Frankie & Roque comic strip, a history of the 'red rum' Shanghai Cocktail, and all the rest of our usual features.
It's the 'Summer of Love' all over again in California. Bears and other same-sex couples are enjoying the newly recognized right to marry, bringing California into sync with much of the rest of the civilized world in its support for gay marriage. Among the hundreds of Bears enjoying this new reality is the editor of the popular Bear-oriented adult magazine 100 Percent Beef (
website
- articles - profile), Scott McGillivray (website - articles), whom we profiled in the last issue of BearParty Magazine. On June 17th '08, Scott was married to Gregory Bessmer, his partner since 1996, in Riverside, CA. Wouldn't it be exciting to publish a social registry, to commemorate the furry nuptials being celebrated by Bears all over the world? Let’s all join together to wish the newlyweds a lifetime of happiness together. Woof!".
